On the eve of the new season starting, we’re delighted to announce the official name for our development team. The squad will be known as the Aberdeen Silvercats and will compete in the British American Football Association (BAFA) Division 1, whilst the Oilcats battle for the Premier Division title. In recent years player numbers have grown rapidly meaning that a second team became not only viable, but necessary to allow for player development and with 2018 marking the club’s 15th anniversary it seemed a fitting way to secure its future success. Head Coach of the Aberdeen Oilcats, Michael Scott, said: “Over the last 15 years our club has gone from strength to strength, regularly finishing in the top five in the UK, however the sport’s growing popularity has meant an influx of new teams to the league and players into the ranks of existing set-ups like ours. This led to the creation of a tiered league system and we felt this was the ideal opportunity to enter a second squad. “The Silvercats will train alongside the Oilcats and players from the Division 1 team can be called up to the Premiership side if required. To mark this new era for the club we will be sporting new jerseys thanks to the continued support of our principal sponsors Bridge Street Social Club.” The Aberdeen Oilcats kick off their Premiership campaign on Sunday, April 15th away to Greenock to take on Inverclyde Comets and Edinburgh Outlaws, while the Silvercats make their Division 1 debut on Saturday, April 14th away to Dunfermline with games against Midlothian Sabres and Paisley Spartans. Coach Scott added: “Both squads will have tough games to start their seasons, however we are confident that our busy offseason training schedule will stand both teams in good stead to get their campaigns off on the right foot."
