Aberdeen Silvercats Gameday 4 – Glasgow

After a bye in week 3 the Silvercats returned to Division 1 action in Glasgow this weekend with the standings wide open. While the powerhouse that is Carnegie may be almost out of sight at the top of the HNC all other positions in the standings are up for grabs in what has been an incredibly competitive division this year. With the Silvercats slightly understaffed on regulars yet welcoming in two rookies for their first ever competitive flag games it was going to be a challenging day against two tough opponents.

Grangemouth Colts vs Aberdeen SIlvercats

Game 2 lined up the final team in the division that the Silvercats had not already met. The Grangemouth Colts came into the day sitting second in the division and as the no10 team in the nationwide Division 1 as ranked by Flag Football World and would provide a real test for Aberdeen. In a game full of momentum changes which saw the lead change 6 times throughout the contest it was a game which went down to the wire. 2 scores in the first half by way of the Bennett – Keith connection had kept the score close with the SIlvercats up 12-7 at the half. In the second period the game really came alive with the Colts scoring out of the gates to go up 13-12. Two tit for tat scores saw Grangemouth take the lead 19-18 running similar plays over and over with the Silvercats defence struggling to counter it. Some adjustments during the break and in the back half of the second period saw that shut down and the defence tighten up. Strong safety play from first time player Chris Nicklas provided the relief of height over the top. A score for Steve Rhynas and a goal line stand inside 2 minutes kept Aberdeen up 24-19. A long run from Eli Rorie to near half way had the game within sight before a long deep touchdown ball to Andy Keith (again) iced the game. One highlight from the game was Gordon McSherry putting himself and some defenders in the spin cycle with 6 spin moves for a gain of 10 yards. The result..SILVERCATS WIN!

Aberdeen Silvercats vs Paisley Spartans

Game 1 was a rematch against the Paisley Spartans who ran out comfortable winners the last time these teams faced off in what was the Silvercats first ever game. This time round things were different from the outset, with the SIlvercats defence holding firm and ensuring long 4th downs which were tricky for the Spartans to overcome. On offence Aberdeen didn’t have it all their way either, with the lack of a blitz from the Spartans QB Jamie Bennett had a long time to through, but with the extra defender held back the receivers were forced to work hard to gain separation. A fantastic throw over the top combined with the blinding speed of Andy Keith resulted in the first touchdown of the game. Another weaving run by new addition Eli Rorie pushed the score to 14-0 as we approached half time. However, some mistakes on defence allowed the Spartans back in the game either side of half time, the defence held on at XP time with neither converted. Two interceptions as the defence tightened up (Andy Keith and Liam Dixon) kept the momentum with the Aberdeen side. A final score for Andy Keith over the top iced the game and saw the Silvercats run out 20-12 in a great game by both sides. SILVERCATS WIN!
